Ueno Park, located about 10 minutes from Tokyo Station by train, is home to about 800 cherry trees of more than 50 varieties, including Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura, and has been a popular cherry blossom viewing spot since the Edo period.

The Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival is usually held from mid-March to early April. During the festival, you can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms at night, under the lights of bonbori (Japanese lanterns).

During the festival, the 700-meter-long Chidorigafuchi Moat is transformed into a picturesque cherry blossom wonderland, with the trees beautifully illuminated at night, offering a breathtaking sight from boats on the water. Yasukuni Shrine also hosts various events during the festival period.

At roughly the size of 11 Tokyo Domes, Yoyogi Park is naturally adorned with around 600 cherry blossoms of all varieties. The early blooming varieties will begin flowering as soon as mid-February, while the regular Yoshino cherry blossoms will peak around late March to early April.

Highlights include the gorgeous cherry blossom tunnel at the “Cherry Blossom Garden” situated between the Shibuya Entrance and South Entrance along with the “Central Space,” whose grassy lawn is encompassed by a tapestry of delightful pink perfect for a picnic.

While Yoyogi Park doesn’t hold regular cherry blossom festivals or events, there are numerous stalls and such around the area to enjoy street food amongst the festive atmosphere.

A 10-minute walk from Yoyogi Park is the Dormy Inn Premium Shibuya Jingumae, a 6-minute walk from the well-connected travel hub of Shibuya Station and Meiji-jingumae Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and Tokyo-Metro Fukutoshin Line. You’ll also be able to walk to Harajuku and Omotesando.
